HETAC Bachelor of Arts in Montessori Education

This three year, full time programme, qualifies students to teach children aged between birth and 12 years. The course consists of five modules: Montessori Theory and Methodology, Montessori Internship, Special Education, Psychology and Irish or Cultural Studies. Each module is taken at Stages 1, 2 & 3.

Programme Content

Theoretical basis for Montessori's philosophy and approach to education and teaching methodology encompassing all curricular subjects relevant to the Primary School Curriculum, (1999).

Montessori Internship/Teaching Practice: The application of Montessori Theory and Methodology within a classroom setting/environment supported by a qualified teacher.

Psychology: The psychology of child development and its application in the classroom.

Special Education: An essential approach to inclusive practice in the classroom.

Irish/Cultural Studies: An elective module, in which the student chooses either Irish (includes one week in the Gaeltacht per year of study) or Cultural Studies (English Literature and Art Appreciation).

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate or Equivalent: 6 Passes; to include 2 Higher Level Subjects, preferably English and one other. Admission may be granted to mature students who, (may not meet the requirements as described,) are deemed to have appropriate experience.

Age: Applicants must be 18 years of age on or before December 31 of the year of entry.
