SNMCI Welcomes Teaching Council Consultation

Ian McKenna, Director of Saint Nicholas Montessori College of Ireland (SNMCI) welcomes the consultation process recently launched by The Teaching Council.

The consultation arises from the recent revision of the Registration Regulation (SI 444 of 2016) which provides that, under Route 4, Graduates with a Level 8 Montessori qualification who commence their studies with SNMCI on or before 1st October 2018, may continue to register with The Council.  While it is regrettable that the new regulation sets this time limit for recognising its qualification for the purposes of teaching in Special Needs settings, clarity on continued eligibility to register with The Teaching Council is important.  It is also assuring that The Council has sought to engage in an open manner with professionals around the country in order to see how Montessori may be accommodated within the primary system.

Ian McKenna stated:

“Since 2014, I have been engaging with the Council seeking the retention of the ‘restricted recognition’ in the context of the revision of the regulations.  Reluctantly, I have accepted that the current recognition status enjoyed by the SNMCI Level 8 will effectively cease within the next few years.”

He continued:

“Earlier this month, a delegation of students and academic staff from SNMCI met with the representatives of the Council and gave voice to the value of Montessori pedagogy within the primary system.  It was a positive engagement and one which strengthened understanding by both parties.  The challenge for SNMCI is to rework its Level 8 programme to ensure it meets the Council’s initial teacher education policy.  This is now our focus.

The meetings hosted by The Teaching Council will further promote the value of Montessori and for this reason, it is important for all to attend and have their voice heard”.

SNMCI is the only higher education institution affected by this revision of the Registration Regulations.  It is important that school leavers on 2017 and 2018 interested in pursuing the Level 8 Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Montessori Education can be assured that on successful completion of the programme, they will be eligible to register with The Teaching Council.

Those wishing to attend the consultation should register with their interest on The Teaching Council’s website.  The schedule of the meetings is as follows:

26 October        Mill Park Hotel, Donegal
10 November    The Connacht Hotel, Galway
15 November    Castletroy Park Hotel, Limerick
17 November    Clayton Silver Springs Hotel, Cork
