Professional Development of Beginning Teachers
In the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Programme, emphasis is placed on providing the newly qualified teacher with opportunities for structured reflection on their teaching during a work-based induction year. The student is not seen as engaged in “teaching practice” but as a “beginning teacher”.
Learning Logs and self-evaluative entries in the Teaching Portfolio will help to promote the regular habit of regarding classroom activities as learning experiences both for the pupil and for the teacher. A questioning, appraising approach will underpin the student’s planning, performance and evaluation in the classroom and encourage open communication and exchanges in College-based contact with tutors and student colleagues.
